Planning and structuring
"I have a Doctorate of Science specialising in Physics. I am now responsible for putting new software into production which runs on a UNIX system. At first glance, the distance between my field of research and the job I am currently doing is immense. But during my PhD studies I managed a large international database which operated under a UNIX system. I could immediately apply this knowledge in my work. I also have a lot of experience in planning and pre-testing new software applications.
“As a part of my doctoral studies I learnt about working systematically, structuring processes and constantly updated my knowledge of new software packages.”
“During my PhD I worked in an international setting in which colleagues routinely consulted each other. In my current job I am constantly communicating with international colleagues. However, there is no direct relationship between the subject of my PhD dissertation and my current job.
“The VUB Career Centre helped me in my search for a job. With their support I applied for different jobs, enabling me to make a well-founded choice in the end. My advice to doctoral students is to try and get a clear picture of what you want from your career before applying for different positions. That will help you make an informed and appropriate choice.”
